Farewell to PhD student Jonas Finke

Jonas Finke, a PhD student from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum whose work focuses on multi-objective optimisation methods in energy system models, visited the ESA group from May to July 2023.

While in our group, Jonas worked with with Febin Kachirayil on combining different multi-objective optimisation methods to better support decision making for the energy transition in municipalities. Municipalities are very heterogeneous, for example regarding the abundance of renewable energy sources, existing building stock and energy demands as well as residents’ attitudes towards certain infrastructure. On the one hand, this leads to significant differences in terms of potential for and cost of decarbonisation. On the other hand, it also affects how technically and socially feasible certain decarbonisation options are. To support decision making in light of this twofold heterogeneity, we combine a Pareto front-generating method (augmented epsilon-constraint method) and a diversifying method (Modelling to Generate Alternatives, MGA) and apply it to a number of energy system models representing German municipalities.

We wish Jonas all the best for the future and look forward to continuing the collaborations!
